Brasilia – On Monday, June 4, the Pastoral Land Commission presented its "Notebook of Conflicts", at the headquarters of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil , in Brasilia, in which human rights violations in the Brazilian countryside in the last year are collected. This initiative was born in 1985, ten years after the creation of the CPT, and since then it has carried out a critical and in-depth analysis of all the material collected.
Traditionally, this material was presented in April, in memory of the 21 peasants killed in Eldorado dos Carajás on 17 April 1996, which was marked as "National Day for land struggle, land reform", but as Mgr. André de Witte, president of the CPT underlined to Agenzia Fides, the numerous attacks of hackers suffered by the CPT in 2017 caused the postponement of the launch.
The dossier presented, according to Mgr. De Witte "draws attention to the number of 71 deaths in 2017".
Antonio Canuto, national secretary of the CPT, during the presentation of the material notes that "these numbers show a scandalous increase in victims in the last year".
The compilation of the work was done on the basis of different parameters , but above all, this work "wants to help establish measures and actions to face and overcome violence and protect victims", an aspect on which Msgr. De Witte insisted in his conversation with Fides.
